If you’re travelling to Gothenburg from the UK or Ireland you’ll most likely arrive at Gothenburg City Airport. Ryanair operates three daily flights from London Stansted and one daily flight from Glasgow Prestwick. Flights from Dublin begin in April 2006. The airport is situated 15 kilometres (7 miles) north-west of the city centre.
The best way to get to and from the airport is by bus. The airport bus departs from the terminal building 50 minutes after each scheduled flight arrival. The journey to the city centre takes approximately 30 minutes and costs 50 SEK (roughly £4.00). On the return journey the airport bus departs from Gothenburg’s central train station 2 hours and 20 minutes before each scheduled flight departure. A taxi to or from the airport will cost approximately 320 SEK (roughly £25).
SAS (Scandinavian airlines) operates 5 to 10 daily flights from Copenhagen to Gothenburg’s other airport, Landvetter. Indeed many Swedes who live on the west coast of Sweden consider Copenhagen a more convenient airport than the one in Stockholm when travelling abroad. SAS also operates 4 to 15 daily flights between Stockholm and Gothenburg.
Landvetter Airport is located 26 kilometres (16 miles) east of Gothenburg. A “Flygbuss” (airport bus) departs every 30 minutes for the 30-minute ride to the central bus terminal, just behind Gothenburg's main railway station. Buses run daily between 05:15 and 12:15. A one-way trip costs 70SEK.
The easiest way to explore Gothenburg is on foot. Alternatively, you can buy a Göteborgskortet (Gothenburg Card). It is available at hotels, newspaper kiosks, and the city's tourist office and entitles you to unlimited travel on the charming vintage trams, as well as buses, ferryboats and certain sightseeing tours. It also offers either free or discounted admission to the city's major museums and attractions. A 24 hour ticket costs 175SEK for adults and 135SEK for children up to 17 years old. A 48-hour ticket is 295SEK for adults and 190SEK for children.
The most picturesque sightseeing tour of Gothenburg is courtesy of the city's famous Paddan sightseeing boats, which traverse the waterways and the busy harbour. Paddan is the Swedish word for "toad" and alludes to the squat shape of the boats, which allows them to navigate under the many low bridges. A Paddan service takes you from the point of embarkation, Kungsportsplatsen (near the Central Station), direct to the Liseberg amusement park.
