Sweden’s second city, Gothenburg was designed by Dutch architects in the 17th century and therefore boasts an attractive network of canals, reminiscent of Amsterdam. With its wealth of parks and flower gardens it has gained a reputation as Sweden's greenest city and is at the forefront of ecological awareness.
In terms of sightseeing, it offers the Museum of World Culture, the Museum of Art, the Botanical Garden and, most impressively of all, the Liseberg amusement park, the largest in Northern Europe. A walk down Kungsportsavenyn, known as Avenyn (the Avenue) is a Gothenburg tradition, even in winter, when the street is heated by underground pipes so that the snow melts away quickly. Its wealth of parks and open spaces has given it a reputation as Sweden's greenest city.
